The development of the six-rowed and two-rowed barley ears is analysed, starting with the stages 4-9 of organogenesis (after Banerjee) up to grain ripening, in order to determine the moments when the number of floral primordia is reduced and finally to determine the number of grains per ear and the environmental conditions that lead to the reduction. The environmental conditions had no influence on the maximum number of floral primordia per ear, but had a strong effect on the subsequent reduction of the primordia number, reduction which differentiates genotypes. For this reason, the difference in the number of grains per ear, within the same genotype, caused by different climatic conditions is bigger than the difference between genotypes recorded under the climatic conditions of the same year.
