Effect of castor bean [Ricinus communis] dust extract on asthmatic patients

The allergic extract of castor bean was prepared for scratch test, intracutaneous test and bronchial provocative test in patients who lived within 2 km of the castor oil mill and other asthmatic patients in order to find out the incidence of positive skin test and bronchial provocative test. Scratch test was done on 120 patients composed of 90 patients (75%) who lived near the castor oil mill and 30 (25%) asthmatic patients. The result of this test showed that incidence of positive scratch test was 66.67% and 63.33% in patients who lived near the mill and asthmatic patients, respectively, while the incidence of positive scratch test in the sample was 65.83%. No sgnificant difference (x2=0.7436), was noted between the groups. Intracutaneous test was done in 17 patients, composed of 5 patients who lived near the castor oil mill and other 12 asthmatic patients. Eleven (91.67%) out of 12 asthmatic patients were highly sensitive to castor bean. All of the 5 patients who lived near the castor oil mill were highly positive with four plus to castor bean with three of them developed anaphylatic reaction 5-10 min after the test. The results of this study and the aeroallergen survey confirmed that castor bean dust was the most important public health hazard problem in the villages within 2 km of the castor oil mill and the incidence depends on the direction of the wind
