Populations of Meloidogyne incognita (Kofoid and White) Chitwood and M. javanica (Treub) Chitwood at densities of 300, 1500, 4000 and 10 000 larvae per potted plant of Hibiscus esculentus increased greatly at mid-season (twelve weeks after inoculation) and after six weeks from fruit harvest, especially with M. incognita. For M. incognita root growth and fruit production were stimulated by low levels of infection (300 and 1500 larvae/plant) but infection at higher levels suppressed growth and production. Infection even at the lowest densities decreased these parameters in M. javanica. Numbers of fruits harvested in the 4th and 6th weeks with M. incognita and the 5th week with M. javanica were not significantly different at all inoculum densities compared with control plants
