Tuber fresh weight in 4 sweet potato cultivars (A28/7, TIS 2328/6 and C26/7) was not affected in 25 % shade, but values were lower in 55 % shade and tuberization almost completely suppressed in 73 % shade for all cultivars. Tuber growth was slower in 55 % shade, and tuber initiation delayed at 73 %. The cultivars O49 and A28/7 had fewer thick roots, lower potential and percentage tuberization indices and fewer and small tubers in 55 and 73 % shade than C26/7 and TIS 2328/6. The latter 2 had a greater capacity for tuber initiation and growth in deep shade, due to inherent earliness in development of tuber bulking and the relative strength of the tuber sink, and are thus more shade tolerant
