The potential nutritive value for ruminants of some fibrous residues from the food processing industry

The investigated substances, by products of food processing industry, which might possibly be used as supplementary animal feed, are ranked in 3 groups: 1) Pepper waste, including seeds and stalks, contained 176 g of crude proteins per 1 kg of dry matter, a good ratio of digestible organic matter and digestible protein and potential metabolizable energy of 9.23 MJ/kg of dry matter. The dry matter content in the fresh matter, however, varied from 141 to 313 g/kg. 2) Pressed sour cherry, grape and blackberry waste contained 511-550 g of dry matter per 1 kg. Potential nutritive value was lower, although the ratio of digestible organic matter and digestible protein was satisfactory. 3) Apple and quince press cake had somewhat higher level of metabolizable energy than pepper waste. The ratio of digestible organic matter protein showed protein deficit. Potassium level in apple press cake was comparatively high and manganese level was comparatively low.
