The longevity of pea (Pisum sativum L.), sunflower (Helianthus annuus) and groundnut (Arachis hypogaea) seeds under controlled temperature and moisture content conditions

The comparative performance of the oil seeds, groundnut and sunflower, and the non-oil seed, pea, to determine their longevity and viability during conservation and stora2048ge is discussed. The parameters used were rate of moisture absorption, deterioration and viability to predict their storability. After 14 hrs of heat treatment at 55 deg C, pea, at 20.6% moisture content had the highest viability followed by sunflower at 15.5% and groundnut at 13.3%. In storage, lasting for 35 days, it was observed that viability declined with time in both germination and tetrazolium tests. Groundnut had the lowest viability.
