Combining ability analysis for harvest index and other quantitative traits in chickpea

The present investigation was undertaken on a diallel cross of eight varieties of chickpea in F1 and F2 generations in respect of plant height, canopy spread, number of primary and secondary branches per plant, and harvest index. Combining ability analysis showed that the mean squares due to both GCA and SCA were highly significant for all the characters in F1 and F2 generations, the former being predominant in magnitude than the latter for all the traits except canopy spread in F2 and secondary branches in F1 and F2 generations. General combining ability effects indicated T 3, JG 62 and Pant G 114 to be best com1518biners for harvest index, plant height and canopy spread, PG 82-1 for plant height and number of primary branches, and Pant G 114 (F1) and EC 26446 for number of secondary branches.
