Fifteen-day-old seedlings of 17 early- and 17 late-duration varieties of rice (Oryza sativa Linn.) were subjected to 50 klux and 30 klux light intensities in a growth chamber for 15 days. Seedling height increased by 54% under 50 klux and 69% under 30 klux intensities. The leaves/seedling were reduced by 23.9% under both the light intensities. The total dry matter of early- and late-duration varieties was reduced by 27.9% and 40.6% under 50 klux, and by 33.7% and 43.7% under 30 klux intensities respectively. Reduction in light intensity reduced the crop growth rate but increased the chlorophyll content. The increase in height and the reduction in dry matter under shade was found to have a bearin1001g on tolerance to low l
