Profitability of ratooning and methods of weed and smut control in sugarcane among the farmers in the Nyanza Sugar Belt

The National Sugar Research Station, Kibos recommends that a farmer should take a plant crop and two ratoons in order to prevent smut incidences. Where there is no smut problem the recommendation depends on the returns a farmer should make from a ratoon beyond which he makes losses and hence uproot and replant. A survey was carried out to find the highest number of ratoons a farmer can go for before beginning to make losses. It was realised that crop husbandry practices and the types of soils, greatly affect the number of ratoons beyond which losses are made. It was suggested that a farmer should not go below 25 t/ha, which is the break-even point, with his ratoon yields
