Hypophyseal-ovarian response in Labeo rohita to the administration of carp pituitary extract

The effects of administration of carp pituitary extract in respect to the response of the hypophyseal-ovarian system in sexually mature Labeo rohita were studied. Treatment with two doses of carp pituitary extract (2 mg/kg body weight and 8 mg/kg body weight) were found most effective with production of hyperplasia, and hypertrophy in the basophils and completion of vitellogenesis, maturation and ovulation and also resulted maximisation of water content in ovaries. Significant increase in plasma gonadotrophins (FSH and LH) and progesterone level and decrease in oestradiol level were observed at spawning.
