A study on the normal levels of ceruloplasmin (Cp) in serum of domestic animals

According to the method of Sunderman, the mean values of ceruloplasmin levels in various domestic animals' serums (212 dairy cattle, 36 yellow cattle, 36 buffalo, 56 goats and 56 swine) are as follows: 14.58 plus and minus 3.54mg/100ml in dairy cattle, 4.00 plus and minus 1.60mg/100ml in buffalo, 5.78 plus and minus 2.41mg/100ml in yellow cattle, 8.21 plus and minus 2.64 mg/100ml in goat and 41.55 plus and minus 16.93mg/100ml in swine. It was found that the younger the ages the lower the levels of ceruloplasmin in serum, the lowest being in newborn calves. In cattle over one year old the levels may reach basically as high as those in adult cattle. Levels of pregnant cows had evident changes. Ceruloplasmin in serum began to raise 4 months after pregnancy, reaching the highest 8 months after, and maintained the level till parturition. One month after parturition the ceruloplasmin in serum gradually recovered to the normal. These changes are of great significance for understanding the growth and development of animal's foetus.
