The effect of plant density and spacing on the agronomic characters of two sorghum varieties, 5DX and Serena is reported. Increase in plant density caused linear increase in grain yield for 5DX and a logarithmic increase in grain yield for Serena, the mean percentage yield being greater for Serena. Total dry weight, mean crop growth rate, leaf area index, leaf area duration were greater in 5DX and increased with increasing plant density. There was a close and positive relationship between leaf area duration, number of ears/m2, number of grains/m2 and grain yield
