The study examines the practice of mixed cropping and the different patterns of mixed cropping in Africa. It is practised by peasant farmers with occasional integration of livestock. The system is influenced by climate and social factors. It ensures and maintains soil fertility, maximises returns, reduces labour input, controls weeds, diseases and pests, and ensures against crop failures. It is the best system of crop and labour management under subsistence agriculture
