Studies of fruit development and maturity characteristics of two cultivars of plantains (Musa AAB group)

The development of the fruits of two local plantain cultivars, Apantu and Apem, were assessed for maturity, using the characteristics of mean finger weight, cross-sectional diameter, fruit length and pulp to peel ratio. There was continuous increase in weight in Apantu up to 90 days after shooting after which fruit weight appeared to have reached a peak, while Apem levelled off after 100 days. No significant difference between fruit weight after levelling off was observed for both cultivars. For all other ages of maturity, there were significant differences in fruit weight. Starch content increased to the peak at 90 and 100 days for Apantu and Apem respectively, but decreased with corresponding increase in sugar content thereafter
