Rai, B.K. | Badrie, G. | Singh, W. | Pooran, B. (Ministry of Nat'l Dev. and Agric. (Guyana). Res. Div.)
15 plants from each field surveyed were uprooted, number of tillers were counted, and stems were split open to find the incidence of stemborer or 'break in stem' in the new hybrids and Star Bonnet, and compared to the variety B.G. 79. Incidence of borer was maximum in Star Bonnet to the extent of 33.5 % against 6.2 % in B.G. 79. The hybrid R had an incidence percentage of 14.6, while the other 3 hybrids were between 3.9-9.4 %. In all varieties, a great percentage of borer incidence was in apparently healthy tillers. B.G. 79 is most susceptible to 'break in stem' to the extent of 3.7 % against 0.0 % and 0.4 % in hybrid S and Star Bonnet respectively. The young plants of all the new high yielding varieties were observed to be infested with larvae of a dipterous borer, Hydrellia sp. n. nr. spinicornis cresson
