Red rice problem in Guyana

Different lots of paddy arriving at rice mills in the 2 major rice growing areas of Demerara and Essequibo were sampled, husked and assessed for percentage by weight of red rice. The date indicated that about 80 % samples of paddy harvested in spring, and 91 % harvested in autumn, had more than 2 % red rice: 55.7, 34.4, 12.5 and 2.8 % samples in spring crop and 74.5, 44.2, 16.7 and 1.6 % samples in autumn crop had more than 5.0, 10.0, 18.0 and 40.0 % red rice respectively. The variety Blue Belle has been released to economically combat red rice. The advantages of the variety are outlined
