Breeding of multiple crosses and synthetic varieties of corn (Zea mays L.)
1983
Sedeeq, F.A.Q.
Three experiments conducted in three locations (Shahrazur, Abu Ghraib, Yaiegi) to develop multiple crosses and synthetic varieties of exotic and local genotypes and select superior commercial cultivars of Zea mays. Crosses were carried out at Shahrazur in Autumn and random mating for the crosses and genotypes was applied at Abu-Ghraib and Yaiegi in following spring using simple partially balanced lattice design with 25 genotypes (5x5) and 4 replications. Results indicated corn may be more adapted for central Iraq in comparison with region, as genotypes at Abu-Ghraib were superior in most characters; hetrosis and unity of most characters of hybrids reduced with advanced generation and multiple crosses for most characters were superior on the second generations (F2) of the hybrids thus indicating the possibility of mixing the seeds of the hybrids and growing it as mixture, and estimating the yield of the mixture in the F2 due to easily mixing and distributing to the farmers
