[Land management under the rainfed areas in the north of Syria]

Average annual rainfall of the study location was 350-420 mm; it included wheat/lentil and wheat/fallow rotations with 3 tillage treatments x 3 weed treatments x 4 replications = plots + observation plots: area of 1 plot was 8 x 20 m = 160. Wheat: regarding weeds the highest production of dry matter was 5-10 cm tillage in wheat/lentil rotation - 1704 kg/ha. The consumption of nutrients amounted to 34.24 kg/ha N, 4.28 kg/ha P2O5, 23.68 kg/ha K2O, and this equals 3.5 times of production weeds in wheat/fallow rotation. The water consumption was almost similar in the two rotations - 3510 m3/ha in wheat/lentil and 3580 m3/ha in wheat/fallow; regarding wheat the highest production was in the 5-10 cm tillage in wheat/fallow and in the 20 cm tillage in wheat/lentil rotations. Concerning economic return the average yield of the wheat/fallow rotation was higher than that of the wheat/lentil: SL4206/ha in wheat/fallow and SL3728/ha in wheat/lentil rotations. Lentil: the highest production of weeds was in 5-10 cm tillage, and this was similar to the crop production where it amounted to 4640 kg/ha of dry matter and the consumption of nutrients amounted to 93.19 kg/ha N, 10.55 kg/ha P2O5 and 85.89 kg/ha K2O. The best production was in the hand weeding treatment where it averaged 1357 kg/ha. The herbicides treatments ranked second while the control treatment gave 69% of the production of the hand weeding treatment. The highest consumption of water was in the hand weeding treatment: 3773 m3/ha. The best production was in the hand weeding treatment in 20 cm tillage while 5-10 cm tillage was second. Consequently the economic yield of wheat/lentil rotation averaged SL6694/ha and that of wheat/fallow rotation averaged SL2700
