In order to examine the cultivation methods for accelerating generation advancement of spring and winter barley three times a year utilizing the natural conditions in Iri area, the standard varieties of growth habit I-VI and the isogenic Betzes lines of nami and uzu were tested from 1985 to 1986. When barley was vernalized at 4 deg C after sprouting forcibly then transplanted under the shade condition of the field on August 12 or 22, the heading was finished by September 29 and 7 to 23 seeds per spike were yielded. The barley transplanted on the field headed earlier than that of the greenhouse, and the former had shorter culm and yielded less seeds per spike but enough for accelerating generation advancement. The nami type varieties were more resistant to hot summer weather than the uzu type varieties. In conclusion, when barley sown on October 25 was moved to the greenhouse on December 14 and 24, immature seeds could be harvested by February 20, being 118 days for the period of first generation. When barley was sown under the field conditions on February 23, immature seeds were harvested by June 20, being 120 days for the period of second generation. Transplanting on the field on August 12 and 22 after vernalization at 4 deg C, immature seeds were harvested by October 19, being 121 days for period of third generation. The above showed the possibility for accelerating generation advancement of spring and winter barley three times a year in Iri area
