Fresh coconut meat and ipil-ipil leaves in the rations of growing-fattening swine
1986
Bocboc, Z.M. Sr.
Results of the study showed that pigs place in treatment ration F gave the highest average total gain in weight (65.69 kilograms) while the lowest was exhibited by growing-fattening hogs fed with treatment ration A (60.05 kilograms). The differences among treatment rations showed highly significant differences (P0.01). Rations containing as much as 25 percent ipil-ipil leaves can be used for feeding growing-fattening pigs. The pigs given treatment ration C consumed the highest average total feed consumption (453.15 kilograms) while those animals placed in treatment ration A had the lowest (381.0 kilograms). The differences among treatment rations showed highly significant differences (P0.01). The addition of 10 percent level of each of fresh coconut meat and ipil-ipil leaves in the ration appeared palatable to the pigs. The pigs that were fed with treatment ration C required the highest amount of feeds to make a kilogram gain in body weight (7.28 kilograms) while those placed in treatment ration F were noted to be the most efficient (5.98 kilograms). The analysis of data showed highly significant difference (LP0.01). The rations with high levels of fresh coconut meat and ipil-ipil leaves enabled the animals to utilize it efficiently into liveweight gains. The pigs fed treatment ration F gave the highest average dressing percentage (70-75%), carcass length (26.45 inches), backfat thickness (1.0 inch), loin eye area (3.63 square inches), and loin cut yields (9.24 kilograms) while those animals placed in Treatment ration A registered the lowest for average dressing percentage (67.0%), carcass length (24.81 inches), backfat thickness (0.88 inch), loin eye area (3.13 square inches) and loin cut yields (8.75 kilograms). The analysis of data for dressing percentage, carcass length, backfat thickness, and loin cut yields showed highly significant difference (P0.1) while no significant difference was observed in loin eye area. The highest net profit of P4,354.00 was obtained with pigs fed treatment ration F while the lowest amount of only P729.50 was realized with pigs placed in treatment ration A.
