Ovulation response and function of the subsequent corpus luteum in cyclic and anestrous postpartum beef cows treated with single PGF2 alpha followed by GnRH
1987
Cruz, L.C. | Kesler, D.J.
The first experiment involved 40 anestrous cows randomly assigned to 3 treatments. All animals received GnRH (100 microgram in saline, intramuscular). Control group received no additional treatment while groups 2 and 3 received Lutalyze (25 mg) and Alfaprostol (5 mg), respectively. Fifty percent of the animals without PGF2 alpha treatment ovulated to GnRH administration whereas those animals that received Lutalyze or Alfaprostol followed by GnRH had 100% ovulation rate. In experiment 2, 46 cyclic postpartum cows were randomly assigned to 3 treatments, namely, control, Lutalyze, and Alfaprostol. All cows were given GnRH (100 microgram in saline, intramuscular). Thirty hours prior to GnRH, Lutalyze (25 mg) or Alfaprostol (5 mg) were given to PGF2 alpha treated cows. Ovulation response was 14.28, 100 and 63.63% for the control, Lutalyze and Alfaprostol treated animals, respectively. Of the animals that ovulated to the treatments, the corpus luteum with normal function was 80 to 72% for the Lutalyze and Alfaprostol groups, respectively.
