Screening for low temperature tolerance in rice at Korea

The cold tolerance screening nursery consists of 13 m wide plots. Cold water (17 degrees C) flows from one side (inlet) of the plot and out at the opposite side (outlet) at normal water temperature. Entries are planted in single columns from the inlet through the outlet. Thus each entry is subjected to a water temperature gradient. A resistant and a susceptible check are placed after every 20 entries. For each entry, the following observations were taken at the inlet and outlet: number of days to heading, panicle number, culm length, leaf discoloration, spikelet number per panicle, spikelet fertility, panicle exsertion and phenotypic acceptability. It was found that data taken from the inlet where water temperature is maintained at 17 degrees C is most reliable in differentiating resistant and susceptible entries. Effects of various agronomic traits on low temperature tolerance were studied. Panicle exsertion and leaf discoloration were found to have no significant effects on total fertile spikelets (used as a measure of cold tolerance). The order of importance of the various traits in selecting for cold tolerance was found to be: fertility panicle number spikelets/panicle days to heading = culm length phenotypic acceptability. Fertility was identified as the most important component of cold tolerance entries.
