Effect of zinc on the seedling growth and micronutrient status in rice cultivars (Oryza sativa L.) [India]

Seeds of three rice cultivars namely, Jaya, IR20 and Kanchi were soaked in 0, 2.5, 5, 10, 15 and 20 ppm zinc sulphate (ZnSO4 7H2O) solution for 16 h. Germination, vigor index, shoot and root length, shoot and root dry weight, zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn) and Zn in endosperm reserve were recorded at 20 days of seedling growth. The results showed that Zn treatments had a favorable effect on germination and vigor index of the seedling. The shoot length was favorably influenced by Zn presumably through auxin metabolism. The Zn content of endosperm reserve due to pre-treatment contributed significantly to early seedling growth. In general, pre-soaking in zinc sulphate solution at an optimum level of 5 ppm resulted in early seedling growth and accumulation of minerals. It was however, antagonistic to Fe thus exhibiting a high negative association.
