Levels of living and aspirations of farmers under the agrarian reform program in Calamba, Laguna [Philippines]

This study attempted to determine the levels of living and aspirations that were brought about by Leasehold Operation (LHO) on tenant-farmers in Calamba, Laguna [Philippines]. The findings showed that the respondents had an average age of 52, and six years of schooling. Most of them were married with an average of five dependents. The number of years that the respondents has spent in tilling the land ranged from 5 to 58 years, with a mean of 19.50. The average area cultivated by the respondents was 1.8 hectares. Farm income, housing, household possession, other material possession were found to have highly and significantly increased after LHO. It was indicated that the larger the farm size cultivated by the farmer-respondents, the higher was their level of living. Similarly, the findings indicated that the educational attainment of the respondents was significantly associated with their aspirations before LHO. It implies that their aspirations were higher toward a better quality of life.
