On-farm research methods in the Andean region outreach program

An on-farm research program was developed in the Andean Region with the participation of research and extension workers. The first phase defined the recommendation domains and the research opportunities whithin these domains. Then the farmers' practices were compared with the proposed practices. Only those having an advantage were considered in the next phase, in which the options are compared and subjected to both statistical and economic analysis. The most promising of those options are then verified in demonstration plots (if they demonstrate stability and have a high probability of immediate acceptance by the farmer). A follow-up survey is conducted to quantify farmer acceptance and this information is fed back into the research system
