Beef production from the buffalypso: comparisons with grade holstein type cattle

The first experiment looks at the performance of 27 buffalypso animals fed on a sugarcane-molasses based diet, over 5 feeding periods averaging 84 days. It was found that the initial and final liveweights were 300.8 and 372.3 kg respectively. The average daily gain (ADG) was 0.82 kg per day with a range of 0.56 to 1.02 kg per day. The average total dry matter intake (DMI) was 7.15 kg per day which was 2.12 % of the average liveweight, and the average feed conversion efficiency (FCE) was 8.72 kg DMI/kg ADG. There was also a comparison of buffalypso bulls and grade Holstein steers on whole chopped fresh sugarcane/sugarcane silage/bagasse-molasses based diets of which there were 4 types. Overall, the buffalypso bulls performed better than the grade holstein steers. The average FCE were 9.15 and 23.29 kg DMI/kg ADG, and the ADG were 0.70 and 0.39 kg per day for the buffalypso bulls and grade holstein steers respectively.
