A comparison of the agronomic performance of eight Pennisetum purpureum (Elephant grass) X P. Americanum (Pearl Millet) hybrids with elephant grass

The experiment was a split plot randomized block design with species as main plots and cutting intervals (6 and 8 weeks) as the split plots. There were 3 replications. Samples were taken for dry matter determination and chemical analysis. It was found that the mean dry matter yield per harvest for all treatments was higher for the 8 week regrowth, while the mean crude protein content of all the grasses was significantly higher (P 0.05) in the 6 week regrowth. The mean crude protein yield per harvest showed no significant difference between the 6 and 8 week regrowths except the hybrid N14 where the 6 week crude protein yield was higher than the 8 week. The study also shows that dry matter yields per harvest at 6 and 8 weeks were not significantly different but because of the increased number of harvests possible at 6 weeks the resulting total dry matter yield per annum was significantly higher. Results on the individuals of each hybrid are given in comparison to elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum)
