The evolution of the Farmers' Training Centre in Trinidad from its inception in December 1979 to December 1985

Johnston, D.
The Farmers' Training Centre in Centeno has been in existence since December 1979. Initially the role of the centre was to upgrade the knowledge and skills of farmers. Courses were residential, with meals and accommodation provided free of charge. Over the years a number of changes regarding the role and function of the centre were made. The major one was the shift in the focus from the practicing farmer to the potential farmer because of the proportion of potential farmers attending the centre. Staff changes over the years resulted in some problems with planning and implementation of courses. In March 1985, the centre became completely non-residential, introducing problems of daily access to the centre and the underutilization of facilities and staff. The paper deals with the formalization of the present objectives of the centre, guidelines on the content, design and operation of each course, setting up of proper record keeping procedures which would further help in evaluation and regular meetings between the staff at the centre and the country extension staff
