Experiences with the mechanised chipping and drying of cassava tubers

A cassava chipper designed and built at the University of the West Indies had an average throw-out of 1113 kg chips per hour with a range of 1012-1157 kg/hr. Chips produced were 3-4 mm thick and of varying shapes. A 'CECOCO' kerosene fuelled, flat-bed dryer was used to dry a 625 kg batch of freshly chipped cassava to storage moisture content of 14 % or less (12 %) in 18 hours. A drying efficiency of 44.8 % was achieved. A production cost model for chipping and drying the cassava was developed
