The specific objectives were to produce a complete ruminant diet using sugar cane by-products to the optimum, to evaluate the improvement in the nutritive value of bagasse through physical and chemical treatment, particularly pelleting and sodium hydroxide and ammonia injection and to demonstrate the use of such diets in practical farm systems; to develop a processing and delivery system for feed manufacture based upon the use of bagasse; to conduct a financial and economic analysis of the project. The results of the pilot feeding trial demonstrated the efficacy of processed bagasse-based high-energy feeds in heifer production. The intake and digestibility trial indicated the superiority of the sodium hydroxide treatment compared to the ammonia treatment both in terms of dry matter intake and digestibility. The treating of bagasse with both these additives was found to be beneficial for processing. A feed processing system is also included
