Preliminary evaluation of herbicides for weed control in upland rice in Trinidad

A wet season trial was undertaken on a River Estate loam in 1986 to evaluate herbicide efficiency in broadcast seeded upland rice cv. Oryzica 1. Rottboellia exaltata L., Cyperus rotundus L., Sorghum halpense L. were the dominant weed species present in the plots. The application of Oxyfluorfen (0.5 kg a.i./ha) at 21 days after seeding (DAS), Oxyfluorfen (1.0 kg a.i./ha at seeding, Oxyfluorfen (0.5 kg a.i./ha) followed by Propanil (2.5 kg a.i./ha) 21 DAS, Propanil (2.5 kg a.i./ha) plus MCPA (1.5 kg a.i./ha) 21 DAS and Penimethalin (2.0 kg a.i./ha) at seeding gave the best weed control. Phytotoxic damage was observed in the Oxyfluorfen treatments at 0 and 21 DAS. Further intensive studies for Pendimethalin, Oxyfluorfen, Propanil, MCDA and Throbencarb are recommended
