Studies on soil management for cowpea production in wet season

A series of trials were carried out on St. Augustine loam and Cunupia clay loam in the wet season to examine the response of cowpea var. California 5 to conventional and zero tillage systems, mulching and nitrogen fertilization or inoculation with Rhizobium. In one study conducted on St. Augustine loam, rototilling the soil resulted in a significant increase in seed yields over the non-tilled plots. Mulching did not benefit the cro p. In another trial in which nitrogen fertilizer (40 kg/ha) or inoculation with Rhizobium was applied to conventionally-tilled and non-tilled plots, there was no significant yield response to tillage system, nitrogen or inoculum applications. On the Cunupia clay loam, tillage, nitrogen or inoculation did not significantly affect cowpea yield or yield components. Studies on a semi-commercial scale for longer periods are recommended
