71 timbers of present or potential commercial importance in the Caribbean are listed. 37 species growing in Trinidad and Tobago are described with respect to the following: nomenclature, distribution and habitat, the tree, the wood, weight, seasoning, shrinkage, working properties, durability, preservation, uses and supply. Mechanical and strength properties of these species are compared using diagrams and tables. Recommendations of data to be used in structural and stress analysis are provided, and basic stresses as well as grade stresses for structural timbers are given
