This paper presents the results of the appearance of toxic amounts of nitrites in the pseudogley soil from Varna near Sabac (Yugoslavia). In spring, after the application of nitrogen fertilizer there were found high concentrations of nitrite nitrogen (53.5 ppm) in water lodged on the lower parts of the plot sown with barley. Such a high concentration of nitrite nitrogen was toxic for plants. Due to the anaerobic conditions, high amounts of soluble iron and manganese were found as well. But in this case there was no negative effect of high soil acidity upon plants. The content of mobile aluminium was below the toxic level.
