Morphogenesis of blue-green algae II. hair differentiation in Gloeotrichia [in Iraq]

Hair differentiation is described in an axenic clonal strain of Gloeotrichia isolated from an Iraqi rice-field. Observations are included on an individual trichome growing on agar under conditions of P- limitation. Under these conditions the hair represented a group of cells derived ultimately from a single apical cell of a juvenile filament. During differentiation, the distal cells underwent gradual elongation and narrowing, followed by vacuolization. The hypothesis is suggested that the apical cell of Gloeotrichia may undergo one of two possible fates, to give rise to a hair or to a hormogonium, depending on the P-status of the filament. However much further study is needed before this can be accepted as a general phenomenon
