Performance of some exotic upland cotton varieties in Bangladesh

The experiment was conducted at Cotton Seed Multiplication Farm, Sreepur, Gazupur and Cotton Research Station, Rangpur, Bangladesh in the growing season of 1987-88. The experiment consisted of 18 exotic varieties including the check variety Rupali. The experiment was laidout in RBD with four replications. The number of bolls per plant was significantly higher than the check in 7 varieties. The highest number of bolls per plant was recorded in BAC-179 (35-90) followed by BAC-186 (18.55) and BAC-178 (17.98). The highest seed yield of cotton 63-35 g/plant and 3.07 t/ha was recorded in BAC-179 followed by BAC-178 which yielded 59.22 gm. per plant and 2.97 tons seed cotton per hect. BAC-189, BAC-198 and BAC-194 also yielded significantly higher than the check variety Rupali in both the stations. These varieties may be tested in more locations before they are recommended for release.
