Use of azolla as a biofertilizer in rice cultivation

Two experiments were conducted during Boro and t. aman season 1987 using azolla rice dual culture followed by the incorporation with the soil either alone or in combination with urea nitrogen. During Boro season azolla included alone gave significantly higher grain yield than control but gave similar grain yield as 40 kg N/ha. Again azolla inoculation/incorporation + 40 kg N/ha gave a grain yield of 4.7 t/ha which was significantly higher than azolla alone or 40 kg N/ha. Though the highest grain yield of 4.9 t/ha was recorded from 80 kg N/ha, but it was statistically similar to azolla inoculation + 40 kg N/ha. The application of azolla increased the nitrogen content of the soil and the N content of the total N-uptake by the rice plant. Similar results were obtained in t. aman experiments conducted in the same field. In this season too the highest grain yield was obtained the azolla + 40 kg N/ha, 4.3 t/ha this yield was as much as that obtained with 80 kg N/ha.
