The total glucosinolate content (TGC) of rape (Brassica napus L.) was investigated in parental, hybrid and segregating populations derived from Shenli rape and tower. It was discovered that the TGC in F1 seeds was mainly determined by the genotype of maternal plant; in F2 and BC1F1 seeds, it was affected by the TGC of maternal seeds; in F3 and BC1F2 seeds, it showed quantitative characters. The amount of TGC was controlled by three pairs of partial dominant genes. The broad and narrow heritability was 89.9% and 72.7% respectively. The plants (F2 and BC1F1) with lower TGC in their seeds are usually associatd with inferior agronomic characters
