Selenium levels in the blood of dairy cattle in Nanjing area were determined fluorometrically by 2,3-diaminonaphthalene. Mean selenium contents were respectively 0.088 plus and minus 0.020 ppm (n=31) and 0.161 plus and minus 0.015 ppm (n=6) for the cows and the bulls, meanwhile glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities in the blood were measured by a modified method of the Hafeman's. Mean GSH-Px activities were respectively 65.52 plus and minus 22.56 unit (n=32) and 116.73 plus and minus 18.65 unit (n=6) for the cows and the bulls. The selenium levels and GSH-Px activity in the blood of the bulls were obviously higher than those of the cows (p0.001). A positive linear relationship (r
