Organic matter digestibility in the dry matter (D) of five roughages, and their 1:1 combination with a concentrate mixture, were determined by a two-stage in vitro technique, using inocula obtained from sheep and goats. The in vivo D values had been previously determined using wethered sheep and goats. There were no animal species differences for values determined in vitro. In the in vivo studies, goats tended to be less efficient than sheep on the lucerne hay + concentrate diet, but more efficient on the barley straw and on the acacia + concentrate diets. When inoculum from sheep was used, the correlation coefficients (r) between in vivo and in vitro D values were 0.90 and 0.94 for roughages and mixtures, respectively. The corresponding correlation coefficients using inoculum from goats were 0.90 and 0.77
