Controlled-release nitrogen fertilizers and their availability to plants. 2.- Effect on wheat plants [Egypt]

A pot experiment was carried out under green house conditions at the Faculty of Agriculture in Zagazig to study the efficiency of some controlled-release nitrogen material (SCU, nitroform, floranid and IBDU) and some conventional nitrogen fertilizers (urea and ammonium sulfate) applied to wheat plants. Also, urea with nitrification inhibitor (AM) was used in this study. At booting stages, nitroform-treated pots produced the highest dry matter content compared to other treatments. The percentage of total nitrogen in wheat plants varied from 2.04 to 4.52, while the nitrogen efficiency ratio (NER) varied between 20.00 and 48.95. At maturity stage, IBDU and Nitroform treatments gave the highest grain yield compared to urea + Am and ammonium sulfate that produced approximately similar yield of grains. Straw yield was the highest with the treatments of nitroform and ammonium sulfate. Total nitrogen uptake by wheat plants at the same stage was slightly higher in the treatments of water soluble nitrogen fertilizers than those of controlled release nitrogen materials except in pots treated with IBDU that could be referred to its high activity index.
