Response of garlic plants grown on calcareous soil to organic manuring and sulphur application [Egypt]
1988
Khalaf, S.M. | Taha, E.M. (Desert Inst., Cairo (Egypt))
Two field experiments were carried out to evaluate the effect of both organic manuring and sulphur application on growth, mineral contents, yield, bulb quality and volatile oil components of garlic manure (0 and 20 m /feddan) and three rates of sulphur (0, 250 and 500 kg/ feddan) were applied during soil preparation. Results revealed that both organic manuring and sulphur application were significantly favourable for plant growth, total yield and its quality as well as N, P and K content within plant tissues. Gas chromotograms of headspace vapours from bulbs revealed that both fertilizers resulted in a considerable increase of the voltile components particularly di- and tri- sulphides. Results also showed that high rate of sulphur was more favourable than the low one.
