Utilization of ethanol for the production of protein by Penicillium oxalicum [Egypt]

This investigation was embodied to examine the capacity of some fungi isolated from the Egyptian soils to assimilate different low molecular weight alcohols. The study confirmed the ability of Penicillium oxalicum to grow and accumulate biomass with a relatively high protein content on substrates containing ethanol as a sole source of carbon. On the other hand, methanol. i. propanol and n. butanol were not assimilated by this organism. P. oxalicum accumulated up to 19.02 g biomass/l on 3% ethanol in comparison to 24.56 g on the equivalent weight of glucose. The maximal protein yields were 41.37% and 49.19% on ethanol and glucose media respectively. Growth on ethanol effect the patterns and quantity of amino acids of the produced protein. Modification of protein composition involved a general increase in the essential amino acids content of the protein produced on ethanol media.
