Harmful effects of plant oestrogens on sexual function and fertility of cows
1988
Kegl, T. ("Dozsa" Mezogazdasagi Termeloszovetkezet, Veszprem (Hungary))
The author surveys the literature of fertility disorders of cows caused by plant oestrogens and discloses his own observations made in a dairy unit. Clinical signs of pathological oestrus caused by phytooestrogens are grouped and emphasis is made on the difficulties of coming to diagnosis, which is helped by description of characteristic symptoms. In the practice of the home dairy units one has to think of the causative role of phytooestrogens when number of oestruses rises sharply together with disintegration of sexual cycle. Importance and opportunity of prevention is stressed and danger connected to maize silage that have been stored in silos for long, failed to be compressed properly, are fermented or have been infected with moulds is also accentuated. The author suggests to increase the proportion of hay dried on the field and haylage in the daily ration of populations in question.
