This study was conducted to clarify the effects of night temperature, light intensity on the quality of pepper seedlings. Seedlings of four cultivars of pepper grown for 44 days at 4 night temperatures (13, 18, 23, and 28deg C) and under 2 levels of light intensity (18.9 and 33.5 Klux) in phytotrons with day temperature and fixed at 28deg C. Plant growth in dry weight and leaf area was maximum under 28deg C night air temperature and 33.5Klux condition. Low night temperature (13 and 18deg C) contributed to relatively increased leaf and root growth as indicated by the precentage of leaf and root dry weight, and to high nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium contents in plants. Flower bud differentiation was enhanced by high night temperature and under 18.9 Klux. Photosynthetic rate was maximum (16.6mg. CO2. dm** (-2). hr** (-1)) at 23deg C. 'Blamhouse-putgochu' was the highest in photosynthetic rate of the 4 cultivars used. Pepper seedlings, cv. Bulamhouse-putgochu, were grown at 3 night air temperatures (13, 18, and 23deg C) and under 5 levels of shading (0, 25, 40, 55, and 70 % of the incident light) for 60 days in the greenhouse. Plant growth was maximum under the conditions of 23deg C night air temperature and no shading. Growth retardation by shading was light under low night temperature (13deg C) condition but severe under high night temperature conditions (23deg C). An increase in night air temperature from 13deg C to 23deg C reduced the number of nodes preceding the first inflorescence by 2 nodes. Thus night air temperature plays a major role on flower bud differentiation
