Outbreak of Aujeszky's disease in pigs in Korea

In Korea, Aujeszsky's disease (AD) was first recognized in swine in 1987. Subsequently the etiologic agent, AD virus, was isolated and characterized by biological and immunological means. The present report describes the pathological findings of these cases. Two male piglets were submitted for diagnosis in the Pathology Division on June 24, 1987. Clinical signs of live piglet were severe nervous signs such as muscular tremour, convulsion, lateral recumbancy, loss of locomotion, incoordination and ataxia, and high body temperature (42.3deg C). Gross lesions of the infected piglets were emaciation, redness of skin, congestion of lungs, moderate enlargement and congestion of lymph nodes, brownish discoloration of liver, petechial or ecchymotic hemorrhage of kidney and urinary bladder, no gastric content and slight meningeal congestion of brain. Histopathological observations revealed non-suppurative meningitis, perivascular cuffing, vasculoendotheliosis diffuse gliosis and glad foci formation, congestion, thrombosis and focal necrosis of cerebellum, tonsil and liver. Eosinophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies were observed in glial cells of cerebrum, Purkinje's cells of cerebellum and crypt's epithelial cells of tonsil and hepatic cells of liver. Rabbits inoculated with infected tissue homogenates died within 2 to 4 days after severe pruritis at the inoculation site. The results indicated that this is the first pathological description of naturally occurring AD in pigs in Korea
