Effect of CaCl2 spray during the drought period on tree and fruit growth, and calcium content of 'Fuki' apple grown in the pot

Five year old 'Fuji' apple trees on M 26 grown in the pot with sandy loam soil were used to study the effects of CaCl2 spray during the drought period on tree and fruit growth, and calcium contents of fruit and leaf. Leaf water potential in both May and August drought treatments, which were not irrigated for one month, respectively was significantly lower than that in the control, which was irrigated frequently to maintain the soil moisture content below to pF 2.5. During the drought period, CaCl2 spray showed a tendency to reduce leaf water potential as compared with none spray. Fruit drop of the drought treatments was significantly higher than that of the control. CaCl2 spray showed a tendency of low fruit drop in May, but not in August. Tree and fruit growth were significantly reduced during the drought period. CaCl2 spray during the drought period of May and August showed a significant increase of fruit calcium content as compared with none spray
