A new rice variety "Donghaebyeo" was developed from a cross of Milyang 20/Nagdongbyeo which was made at the Yeongnam Crops Experiment Station (YCES) of Rural Development Administration in 1979. Its heading date is about 8 days earlier than that of Chucheongbyeo in ordinary culture. Donghaebyeo has good grain shape with low amylose content and good eating quality. It is resistant to stripe virus and moderately resistant to dwarf virus and black-streaked dwarf virus disease, but susceptible to bacterial leaf blight and major insect pest in rice. Donghaebyeo yielded about 4.93 t/ha 7 % higher than that of Sangpungbyeo in the local adaptability yield trials at 28 locations during 1986-1988. It would be adaptable for the single or double cropping in the southeastern coastal region and sub-alpine area of southern region of Korea
