'Hongro' was derived from the cross between Spur Earliblaze and Spur Golden Delicious made by Horticultural Experiment Station in 1981. Testing was named because of its attractive good color and ripening time which approximately coincided with 'Baekro' day by moon calendar meaning 'white dew falling day'. Mature tree of 'Hongro' grown on M. 26 rootstock is moderately vigorous and round spreading in growth habit. It has the nature of high productivity owing to genetic spur type. Fruit ripening is uniform with no premature drop and no cracking. Fruits are round conical with medium deep cavity which is often slightly russetted. Alternaria leaf spot incited by Alternaria mali Roberts has been observed but has not been a major problem. To bitter rot incited by Glomerella cingulata or Microphoma spp, 'Hongro' has not shown an abnormal susceptibility. The fruit is medium sized (78.5 to 84.2mm diameter), light yellowed flesh, attractive bright red stripes with 80 to 100 % colored. Fruit quality is characterized crisp and juicy with high sugar and low acid content, aromatic flavor. The fruit is more durablein handling compared to 'Tsugaru' ripening in this season. 'Hongro' has abundant pollen and high % pollen germination. Therefore, it shows a good cross compatibility with other leading cultivars. In addition, relatively high % fruit set was otained from self pollination of 'Hongro'. Pollen germination on the stigma and trace of pollen tubes in the crosses between 'Hongro' and other cultivars were observed under the fluorescence microscopy
