A variety screening trial was conducted at Sto. Nino, Cagayan [Philippines], 15 degrees North and 50 m asl during the 1986-87 planting season using selected cultivars/clones from Holland, Germany, CIP [International Potato Center] and SAPPRAD [Southeast Asian Program for Potato Research and Development]/IPB [Institute of Plant Breeding]. The objective of the trial is to compare the yield performance of each selection and to be able to identify the best cultivars suited to the site. Results of the trial indicated significant differences in terms of survival rate, number of mainstem/plant number of interodes/stem and height at maturity. The 32 entries performed significant difference in terms of yield. Sixteen cultivars out of the 32 entries attained yields higher than the standard lowland variety. Berolina only yielded 24 t/ha while four cultivars gave yield camparable to Cosima, which yielded 21.3 t/ha. Among the top yielders are 3 imported clones. Red Pontiac, Serrana and Atlantic with yields of 35.1, 25.7 and 28.7 t/ha respectively, ten selections from Holland namely: Bartina, Baraka, Kennebec, Alpha, Casper, Amigo, Diamant, Cardinal, Famosa and Sante gave yield of 32.1, 31.9, 30.9, 30.4, 30.2, 28.9, 27.2, 25.5, 25.3, and 25 tons/ha respectively and two CIP and one SAPPRAD/IPB clones namely P3 and Br 112-113, and SAPPRAD Line 4 got yields of 28.7, 25.2 and 24.4 t/ha respectively.
